Research Task: Dance Music

Analysing the following 'dance music' genre songs:

1) Sigala - Sweet lovin' ft. Bryn Christopher

2) MK- 17

3) CamelPhat & Elderbrook 'Cola'

1) What makes all of these music videos from the dance music genre?
All these music videos have similarities in  common which can help an audience define them within the 'dance music genre'. For example, they have fast cut shots in time with the dance beat- this sustains audience interest and prevents boredom.

You could also look at the locations of each of these videos because they are all set in lively atmospheres with lots going on simultaneously. The fast shots adds a sense of realism that they are in a dance/ club environment. In addition, all of the videos will feature at some point multiple people dancing... this feeds to the idea that they fit in with the conventions of dance music.

2)Explore how the artists are using representation to appeal to their target audience in these three videos by picking out key frames from the video to analyse.

3)What other music videos could you find from the same genre? Outline two and explain why you think they are termed dance.

Both songs linked above could be termed 'dance' due to the fact they have many similar conventions regarding this genre. Both videos are upbeat and contain dancing scenes to emphasise that it is the type of music that may be played in a clubbing/ party environment. In addition, both of the videos feature bright colours (this is shown in the choice of clothing in the 'sorry' music video, and the background in the video 'lean on' video).  Also, the stereotypical aspect for this genre of music videos will often feature woman wearing minimal clothing and looking nice... this is the case for both of these videos. This creates a wild and crazy atmosphere, which again,  has connotations with a club/party.

For instance, in this particular mid shot, a woman is free style dancing in time with the dance beat and fast cut shots. This creates a sense of realism that they would be in a dance/ club environment- this also further contributes to the sense of realism.  All of these fast cut, different angled shots fully exaggerate the dance feel aimed to be conveyed- this allows the audience to have a sense of euphoria and the 'feel good' dance feeling.
