Throughout one of Miley Cyrus' most famous music videos, Wrecking Ball, it can be brought to the attention of the audience that she is portraying herself as a powerful female artist who is able to present her strong emotions through sexual links and references, this is shown in various scenes through out the video.
The music video has been composed showing Miley Cyrus to be dressed in a very provocative way, wearing limited clothing (and in some scenes no clothing at all). This may be viewed as having connotations with intimacy and sex, especially around the timing 0.48 where her facial expressions and body language appear to have obvious sexual references.
The main focus and purpose of the video has been composed to express to an audience Miley's strong emotions and give an insight into how she is feeling. She repeatedly breaks 'the fourth wall' by making direct contact with the camera and audience which emphasises that the video is just a fantasy of hers. Her strong lyrical performance may leave the audience questioning why she is dressed and acting in a provocative manner, perhaps this could be linked with the theory of the 'male gaze' regarding how the viewer is engaging with the visual media.
Despite the links with the 'male gaze', the music video doesn't feature a male individual at all. However, the song's lyrics have made is clear to the viewer that she is referring to a man who has once hurt her at some point in her life. The fact that she is the only person featuring in the entire video could be interpreted in multiple ways, firstly, it could emphasise that she holds all the power and not anyone else. It could also be regarded that she doesn't need a man in her life and she is strong and powerful enough as she is on her own. Perhaps the wrecking ball could symbolise a male figure which could be interpreted that men (like a wrecking ball) is a very destructive part of her life.
