Key light:
- Most important in lighting setup
- Highlight form and dimension of the subject
- Omitting key light can result in a silhouette effect
- Key lights may be placed in a scene to illuminate a moving subject at opportune moments
Fill light:
- May be used to reduce contrast of a scene to match dynamic range of recording media
- Using less fill will make shadows seem lighter/darker than normal causing the viewer to react differently by inferring envorinomental and mood clues from the tones of the shadows
- The positioning of the fill affects the overall appearance of the lighting pattern
Hair light:
- Works especially well in portrait photography
- Lights up the hair, often angled down 3 feet above the head
- Add interest and texture to an image
